IB students will receive a final IB score on a 1-7 scale (4 and higher are passing). This score is made up of both internal and external assessments that measure the extent to which a student has mastered both advanced and basic academic skills. Student performance is assessed against a set of standards on IB rubrics.

External assessment means the assessment is scored by IB graders while internal assessments are scored by the teacher and moderated by the IB organization. External assessments mostly include exams that students sit for in the spring at the end of the course and can include a variety of assessment methods such as essays, short answers, multiple choice, and response questions to case studies, text, or data provided. Some subjects also have additional external assessments carried out with the teacher in the course that are then submitted to IB for grading such as the IB English Lang & Lit HL Essay and the IB Visual Arts Comparative Study and Process Portfolio for example. All Internal Assessments (IAs) are also carried out with the teacher in class and make up part of the total IB score.

  • IAs are due when they are due. No exceptions.
  • IAs include oral assessments (IOs).
  • If any IA is not turned in on the due date, it cannot be submitted to the IB organization. Students will have an incomplete assessment (N grade) for that subject area.
  • Students who receive extended time on assessments through a 504 or IEP will receive (if needed) 72 additional hours to turn in an official IA without penalty. The 72 hours starts at the time the IA was due and includes non-school days. For example: IA due Friday 2nd period (8:30 AM) so IA is due following Monday at 8:30 AM.
